Anna Allen – Philippa Pants

The Philippa pants sewing pattern was created out of a need for simple but sturdy tapered-leg trousers, slim fitting and high waisted. The side seams are completely straight, just as jeans and pants were typically made in the 1930s and ’40s. The straight side seams make this pattern perfect for selvedge denim, which is a type of denim woven on narrow looms.
The Philippa pants include waist shaping at the front and back, two back darts, and feature a classic button fly, back pockets, and belt loops. The pant length ends at the ankle but can be lengthened or shortened as desired.
This pattern is drafted for woven, non-stretch fabrics.

Fabric marker/chalk, tailor’s awl (optional), or carbon paper + tracing wheel
Heavy-duty button thread (for hand-sewn buttons)
Button fly:
sizes 00–16 — four ½" or ⅝" buttons
sizes 18–22 — five ½" or ⅝" buttons
Waistband button: one ¾" or ⅞" button
Interfacing — 20" wide (all sizes)
Fabric recommendations:
Cotton canvas, cotton rigid denim (including selvedge denim), twill, corduroy, drill, bottom-weight woven fabrics.
Designed for non-stretch woven fabrics. Using fabrics with small stretch may affect fit.
